The Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin is one of the most outstanding in the world, known for its exceptional quality and uniqueness. Viñas del Jaro, as a D.O. Ribera del Duero winery, reflects all its character and richness.
With an area of 23,000 hectares of vineyards, Ribera del Duero extends over the provinces of Valladolid, Burgos and a small part of Soria. Its unique character is defined by an extreme and variable climate, together with a diverse and complex geology at altitudes ranging from 720 to 1,000 meters. Its soils, composed of clayey sands, limestone and calcareous concretions, provide the perfect environment for growing vines of exceptional quality.
The Tempranillo grape, known as Tinto Fino, is the main variety in the wineries of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. Other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Garnacha Tinta are also grown in smaller proportions. For white wines, Albillo Mayor is the predominant authorized variety.
VIÑAS DEL JARO
Viñas del Jaro, our first winery, was founded in 1997 in the heart of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. It is located in the “El Quiñón” estate, in a privileged enclave on the right bank of the Duero river, and consists of 65 hectares divided into different sectors according to the type of soil and grapes. The estate is surrounded by a forest of centenary oaks called “jaro”, which give the winery its name.
El Quiñón has 65 hectares, of which a total of 49 hectares are dedicated to vineyards. Tempranillo is the most widespread variety with a total of 44 ha, 2.5 ha. Merlot, 2.5 ha. Cabernet Sauvignon and 1 ha. of the native variety Albillo Mayor. The estate is located on a south-facing slope with an altitude difference ranging from 800 meters to 745 meters, and has several slopes with different orientations, which makes it perfect for obtaining wines of high personality.
The El Quiñón estate joins the moorland with the lowlands, passing through three terraces created by the course of the Duero River. Poor soils of pebbles and limestone provide our wines with a unique identity of terroir, freshness, elegance and great cellaring capacity.
We make six unique wines from Ribera del Duero with Tempranillo grapes: Jaros, Jaros Roble, Jaros 9, Chafandín and Sed de Caná. To complete our catalog, we have our white wine, Jaros Albillo Mayor.
If we start with our estate wine, we approach “Jaros”, aged for 17 months in French oak barrels. Of our estate wine, we make a much younger oak varietal. Jaros 9 is our latest addition to the catalog, aged for 9 months in French oak barrels.
The oldest vines in the vineyard, over 50 years old, produce the grapes that give life to one of our DO wines with the most personality: Chafandín. From the highest part of the Pago comes our most premium wine production, Sed de Caná, which only sees the light of day in certain vintages.
Finally, we have Jaros Albillo Mayor, an exclusive D.O. Ribera del Duero white wine made with albillo mayor.
