Priorat has been linked to wine for centuries. Its slate soils, extreme climate and unique orography, together with the work of generations of winegrowers, have shaped a winemaking tradition that today combines ancient knowledge with modern technology in the different wineries of the D.O.Q. Priorat. Priorat.
If there is one thing that the Priorat Qualified Designation of Origin (D.O.Q. Priorat) has, it is its exceptionality. This region extends under the Montsant mountain range, in Tarragona, while the Siurana river crosses the landscape on its way to the Ebro. With a marked thermal contrast between day and night and low rainfall, the vines must adapt to extreme conditions which, combined with the llicorella soils, provide great minerality and concentration to the wines.
Every corner, with its terraces, paths and farmhouses, reflects the essence of the Priorat, a place with its own identity that never leaves you indifferent, like our winery Cal Grau.
CAL GRAU
Located in Finca La Solana, between El Lloar and El Molar, Bodegas y Viñedo de Cal Grau captures the essence of the D.O.Q. Priorat in every bottle. Priorat in every bottle. Of its 42 hectares, 22 are dedicated to the cultivation of vineyards that grow in terraces on slate soils. The native red Grenache and Carignan varieties are combined with international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, all cultivated with special attention to the unique characteristics of each plot: altitude, soil, orientation and variety.
The tradition and quality of our wines lies in a meticulous process. Each batch of grapes is made independently in small tanks, which allows each wine to be linked to its place of origin. Aging is carried out in the subway cellar, called Cava de Crianza, using 300-liter French oak barrels, where the wines mature separately until they reach their maximum expression. The final blend is defined after tastings, ensuring that each bottle is a faithful representation of the unique character of Priorat and its terroir.
At Bodegas y Viñedos Cal Grau we make three wines that reflect the character of our Priorat estate. Petit Agnes is a fresh and fruity wine, aged for four months in barrels, made from our Garnacha and Cariñena vineyards, known for their fruity profile. Clos Badaceli is aged for 14 months in new French oak barrels and is made from carefully selected Grenache vines. Its name refers to the mountain located just in front of the winery, which inspires the intensity of this wine.
Les Ones, the most limited production wine, is a single varietal Samsó, made only in special vintages. Its name, which in Catalan means “waves”, alludes to the undulating terraces of our vineyards. This wine stands out for its balance between freshness and complexity, being vibrant and well structured.
